1. Read through the brief facts for each issue. You should engage in additional research to help you.
2. Provide a claim someone holding a conservative ideology would make about the issue and a claim
someone holding a liberal ideology would make about the issue and explain why it would be a
conservative or liberal viewpoint.
3. For ONE of the claims you identified, explain which civic values are present. In other words,
which values would someone making the claim hold as important?
4. Explain how someone making that claim could have been politically socialized to hold their
opinions. Provide an example (personal or hypothetical) to demonstrate how these agents of
socialization led to the beliefs.
Issue 1: Immigration
The United States offers permanent legal status to around 1 million immigrants per year, and roughly 26%
of the U.S. population is made up of immigrants and their children'. Additionally, estimates of 11,500,000
undocumented immigrants live in the country as of 20222. The issue of immigration has been hotly
contested for decades. In the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump often rallied his supporters with
chants of "Build the wall!" in reference to a proposed border wall on the American southern border to
discourage undocumented immigration. President Obama's administration deported over 5 million
people but also created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allowed
undocumented children to remain in the United States.
