Secondary succession is a type of ecological succession that refers to the gradual recovery of the destroyed acres of forest.
Ecological succession can be classified into primary succession and secondary succession. Primary succession refers to the establishment of a substrate for vegetation. Once a vegetation is established, it may be destroyed by forest fire, harvesting or any other process. This is recovered by the process of secondary succession on the previously established soil substrate by a series of changes in the ecosystem. This is a quicker process as the substrate rich in nutrients is already present for the plants to grow and the seeds, roots and other vegetative propagules may be still present in the soil which can germinate quickly.
